Open Ear Design
SHOKZ OpenRun Pro
The OpenRun Pros are our best overall running headphones. The secure wrap-around fit keeps them in place throughout movement, and the lightweight design keeps them comfortable throughout wear. They aren’t noise canceling by any means, since the open-ear design allows in a lot of ambient sound, but they're a safe pair to wear so you can hear things like cars, cyclists, and other runners. If you’re looking to boost your playlist, you can use TurboPitch, which ramps up the bass.

Tactile Buttons for Music Control
Beats Powerbeats Pro
These are the earbuds I personally reach for on my runs. The buds don't offer an official noise cancellation mode, but they do a solid job at drowning out sound. The H1 chip makes them easy to pair with my Apple Watch or phone to access music and guided runs. You get different-sized rubber tips to choose from, so you can ensure a proper fit in your ear, and the ear loop keeps them in place as you move. Use the tactile buttons on the logo to pause and play music, answer calls, and more.

Safest for Outdoor Runs
Sony LinkBuds S
The Sony LinkBuds are designed with a “ring driver” that allows in outside noise to keep you safe on outdoor runs. In our testing, we were able to hear approaching cars, and easily greet and hear other runners and cyclists. It’s not a totally open-ear design, but it allows more ambient sound than the transparency modes of other earbuds on this list. The earbuds are sweat-resistant, and while you’ll lose some audio quality given the design, the up to 20-hour battery has you covered for those long runs.

The Jaybird Vista 2 earbuds pack an extra 2 hours of battery life compared to the original model, giving you up to 8 hours of listening time on a single charge (up to 24 hours when paired with the charging case).
You can switch between SurroundSense and Noise Cancellation modes to control the amount of ambient sound allowed in. The buds are IP68 rated, meaning they’re water-, sweat-, and dust-resistant, plus shock- and impact-resistant for your roughest training schedule.

Open-Ear Earbuds
SHOKZ OpenFit Open-Ear Earbuds
If the neckband for the regular SHOKZ isn't your speed, there's an earbud option that gives you the comfort of a smaller design, but maintains the same open-ear tech. The charging case bumps the battery life up to 28 hours, and you'll have up to 7 hours of listening time per charge. That's enough to carry you through your warm up, long run, and cool down. The wrap-around pieces have soft cushioning, so they won't pinch or weigh down your ears. You'll be able to safely hear the world around you while tuning into your playlist.
