When I ran in the Under Armour Sonic 7 for the first time I called it a unicorn because it's a versatile trainer that can be worn for all kinds of workouts—speed, long, recovery—at a rare price tag of $110. I knew even then the shoe was a worthy contender for our annual Shoe Awards. Now, the shoe is on sale during Prime Day, which runs from July 8 to 11, starting at 30 percent off (depending on color and size).

Formerly called Hovr Sonic, the brand simplified the name but kept its soft platform. This Hovr foam gets an update; Under Armour tuned its one-piece supercritical midsole to become softer and lighter. The result is plenty of pop with each step, making this value trainer almost as bouncy as its more expensive counterparts.

Compared to its predecessor, the shoe gets a more modernized appearance with its triple jacquard mesh breathable upper that’s streamlined for a sportier aesthetic. The Sonic 7 is less weight than the Sonic 6 despite getting rid of cutouts for a cleaner look.

We loved the Sonic 7’s cozy fit and high rebound.

Testers appreciated the Sonic 7’s sleek construction despite its cushioned ride. They liked having all the midsole support without the usual beefiness you get from Hovr trainers.

“This shoe is a budget shoe, but doesn’t feel like a low-end shoe,” said tester Shayne Murray, who runs 30 miles per week averaging 9:00 per mile and previously tested the Brooks Revel 7. “It hugs the foot in the right places, is comfortable, and even feels a little plush. Run in them, and you even get a little bounce (legs don’t feel like tree stumps) and they are lightweight.”

She did note, however, that the shoe runs a little narrow; some runners may want to size up.

This fit worked out perfectly for tester Austin Warman, who is a self-described narrow-foot runner. “This shoe for me fit perfect on my foot,” said Warman. “My feet were easily able to breathe while I was running. While the shoe did not keep my feet dry, the shoes themselves dried quickly.”

The Sonic 7 is an ideal trainer for beginners looking for a lighter option with supportive cushioning, or for veteran runners pinching pennies looking for a versatile workhorse.
